Rose Laymond Gardner (lovingly known as Rosie) was born February 19, 1933 in Calvert, Texas to the parentage of Mr. Joseph Laymond, Sr. and Mrs. Nebertha Drennan Laymond. Rose received her formal education from the Calvert Colored High School (W.D. Spigner High School). After high school, she furthered her education by attending Mary Allen College and then completing her Bachelor's degree in Home Economics and a certification in Art Education from Prairie View A&M University and a Master's degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University. She was a school teacher with the Dallas Independent School District for 42 years. Rose accepted Christ at an early age. She, along with her family, was a member of the Greater Golden Gate Baptist Church in Dallas for many years under the leadership of Pastor Fabian Jacko. She met and married Roscoe Elliott Gardner for 54 years and lived in Dallas, Texas. Rose served as a block captain for her street with the Cedar Crest Home Owners Association, a member of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Dallas Metropolitan Section and was honored as an Outstanding Pillar in the Community Honoree, and a member of the Prairie View's Dallas Alumni Chapter. Rose Gardner departed this earthly life on January 13, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Sr. And Nebertha Laymond; three sisters, Ever Rose Whited, Ruthie Phillips, and Bernita Crayton; four brothers, Charlie, Joseph Jr., Andrew Lee, Chester Laymond; and husband Roscoe Elliott Gardner. Her pleasant memories are cherished by her three daughters, Mary Diane Loftis (Mitchell), Lazonda Gardner, Zerlinda Gardner; five grandchildren Devin Ford (Roderick), Lashell Newman (Christopher); Raven Smith, Kayla Loftis, and Zaiden Gardner-Releford; three great grandchildren Raegan Ford, Logan Newman, and Kallie Skye Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
