WYNN DIXON

Wynn Mitchell Dixon Sr., 76, best friend and husband to Mrs. Mary Bernadean Brooks Dixon for 49 years, passed away peacefully at Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest in Waco, Texas, with his family by his side on June 18, 2021 at 7:35 p.m. His last words were “My wife.”

Wynn was the fourth child born to Paul Dixon and Elzie Grace Duty on October 6, 1944. Wynn began his high school education at Booker T. Washington. He graduated as Valedictorian from George Washington Carver in 1963. Wynn attended Jarvis Christian College and earned a Bachelor of Arts. He was a founding member of the Texas College Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity incorporated.

Wynn was a comedian, singer and debater. If he didn’t see it or hear it first, your information was incorrect! He never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with an infectious smile that he passed on to his three sons Everett, Mitch and Jason.

On August 12, 1972, Wynn and Bernadean were united in marriage and moved to Plano, Texas. The two were instantly a family of three because Wynn had a seven-year-old son, named Everett Mitchell. Then, they welcomed two sons, Wynn and “Mitchell” Dixon II and Jason Bernard Dixon.

Wynn’s professional career began in Dallas Independent School District. He taught mathematics at Oliver Wendell Holmes middle school. He continued to teach mathematics when he moved to Plano at Wilson Middle School. During his tenure there, he organized both a tutorial program and an introduction to golf class. With gift of conversation, he became a salesman for Xerox Corporation.

Wynn sought employment with the Board of Pardons and Parole with encouragement of his good friend Henry “Skip” Johnson. In October of 1975, he was hired as the first Parole Case Worker. Wynn was eventually promoted to Unit Supervisor in 1978 and served in that position until 1984.  This promotion uprooted him and his family to set up residence in Sugarland, Texas. While there, Wynn made history as the first African-American regional supervisor at this institution.

Wynn completed his service of 26 years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Parole Division at the Houston VI District Parole office on September 28, 2001. Then, Wynn committed to golf as his new “career”!

Wynn was an avid golf player. He was active in golf with his group affectionately known as, Brothers of Houston and the Lite Pros. Wynn’s secret to beating his opponent was that he rarely hit with his driver. Instead, he hit with his iron. During this time, he became “Pops’ to Shelley Levi and Marc Metze.

At an early age, Wynn confessed Christ at New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. B.T. Lewis. While living in Plano, Texas, Wynn united with New Birth Baptist Church under Rev. Charles Terry.

Wynn was an active member at Mt. Carmel Church under the leadership of Rev. Curtis Lucas, where he remained a faithful member, singing in male chorus and was a dedicated deacon. Prior to Dallas, he and his family would visit with Mt. Rose Church led by Bishop Jeffery Thomas.

Wynn is survived by his wife, Bernadean (My wife); sons, Everett Mitchell (mother Helen Davis), Wynn “Mitchell” (Charity), Jason Bernard (Andrea); five grandchildren, Dreson, Mia Bella, Giovanna, Jason II and Jasea Dixon. His Ben Milan Dixon (Vivian), Wayne Morris Dixon (Betty); sisters, Fredia Dixon and Ouida Thomas (Earl). He loved each of his cousins, nieces and nephews, wanting success for each. He also leaves to cherish his memory, great friends, Johnny Johnson (Bro. J; Dr. J) and L.D. Dabney.

He was preceded in death by his Father, (Paul Dixon), Mother (Elsie Grace) and brothers Jimmy Randolph, Rodney Kent Burns, Shahid Karriem Ansari and Uncle Frank K. Duty.
