ALONZO MCDOUGLE

September 20, 1954 — July 14, 2021

Alonzo A. McDougle, 66, passed away on July 14, 2021 in Dallas, TX after a short battle with lung cancer.

Affectionately known as “MAC”, he was born to parents Alphonso and Blanche (née Sapp) McDougle, on September 20, 1954, in St. Augustine, Florida. Alonzo graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1972 and received advanced military training upon enlistment in the United States Air Force. After almost 4 years of service as an aircraft maintenance specialist serving at McGuire AFB, NJ, he was honorably discharged and attended radio broadcaster training to leverage the distinct and booming voice the Lord blessed him with. He had a long career in various roles to include in radio broadcasting, long-haul trucking, offshore-shoring, and as a water provision and maintenance technician.

At McGuire AFB, he met and married fellow airman Cathy Byers, the love of his life, on July 16, 1976, who survives him. Alonzo is also survived by his son he called “Junior” with the same booming voice, big nose, and hard head Corey of Dallas, TX; his daughter who shared his birth month, who he called “Ri”, and always “took his breath away” Ashley (and her partner Damario) of Jennings, LA; and his baby girl who was his greatest caretaker and giggle buddy Patrice who he lovingly called “Peach” of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren (Taylor, Kelsie, Lionel III, Allyson, Drayden, and Grayson); his brothers Harold Sapp (Barbara) in Jacksonville, FL and Lamar McGuire in St. Augustine, FL; his dear and gracious Aunt Evilene Davis in St. Augustine, FL; his loving and kind cousin Barbara Sapp Singleton; beloved sisters-in-law Rita Olverson in Chesapeake, VA; Carolyn “Bezzy” Jones in Houston, TX; Mona Byers in Crowley, LA; Lori Ann Byers in Lake Charles, LA; his charismatic brother-in-law Leslie “Buddy Buddy” Byers of Houston, TX; his beautiful god-daughter Crystal Byers Castille; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends. Alonzo was predeceased by his parents, his darling sister Patricia McDougle, his “second mother” Aunt Leola Sapp, his special cousin Mamie Sapp Irving (and her husband Leonard), and his brothers-in-law John “OV” Olverson, William Jones, and Michael Shane Byers.

Alonzo was a fun-loving creative at heart who took great pride and joy in writing songs and poetry to include some published works, reading his Bible and quoting scripture, talking on his CB radio, singing in his church choir, enjoying the outdoors especially fishing, listening to the Blues and public access radio, drinking a cold beer, watching old Kung-fu and action movies, laughing with his whole being, meeting new people, and telling stories to anyone who would listen (some of them were not always rooted in truth but still hilariously entertaining).

Memorial service arrangements will be shared at a later date. The family asks that people make donations in Alonzo’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the Air Force Aid Society to benefit those fighting cancer and to enable community-based programming and assistance for veterans in lieu of sending flowers.
