BARBARA BUCHANAN

Barbara Jean Buchanan went home to Jesus on Sunday, December 20, 2020. Barbara was born to Robert Latham and Willie Davis on January 22, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri. As a child she was a sweet and caring little girl.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother to her daughter, Robyn Buchanan, Barbara was a dear grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, mentor, and friend. Throughout her life she held an unwavering faith in God and shared her love with all. She was a member of New Sunny Mount Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Donald Hunter.

Barbara was a respected and accomplished businesswoman. She was the founder and owner of “Barb’s Hairworks”, a beauty salon that was a cornerstone in the community for over 40 years. Hairworks opened on West Florissant in Jennings and later moved to the Bellefontaine neighborhood.

Barbara earned her PhD in Hair Design from The Midwest Hair Designers Guild. She was a Master Cutter and traveled to hair shows throughout the country to advance her profession. She was a mentor to numerous operators and stylist. She was also an active member of the Busy Bees Women’s Social Club.

Barbara joins her parents, Robert and Willie, her brother, Vernon Latham, and brother-in- law Delton Murphy in Heaven.

She is survived by her daughter, Robyn Buchanan; Grandchildren, Raven Buchanan, Dirion Hutchins, and Dominique Sterling; her siblings, Rodeana Murphy, Jeannette Haddox, Pauline Pettiford, Pearl Bodie (Lloyd), Bill Haddox, Robert Latham Jr. (Maureen), Larry Latham, and Ben Latham (Annette); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, mentees, customers, and friends.
