Beatrice Minnie Stanton was born December 19, 1937 to the union of Bessie Jones and Delaware Stanton in Panola, Alabama. Growing up, Beatrice spent her early years in Panola before moving to Saginaw, MI to finish high school. In 1956, Beatrice graduated from Saginaw High.
Beatrice affectionately known as Ms. Bea was loved by all who encountered her.
At the age of 24, Beatrice was offered to purchase insurance by Walter Scott Garrett, who told her upon meeting that “she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen” and that “he KNEW she would be his wife”. Soon after, they would unite in Holy Matrimony and would share 25 years of marriage before Walter preceded her in death. This union would bless them with 5 beautiful children.
After marrying in Saginaw, MI, Walter and Beatrice moved to Chicago, IL. While in Chicago, three of their children were born. In 1969, both Walter and Beatrice migrated back to Saginaw, MI, after obtaining employment with General Motors. Beatrice became an active member of the community, political circles, and polls and served the Lord as a member of Greater Williams Temple for over 30 years.
Beatrice would work at GM for 30 years before transferring to Arlington, TX. Ms. Bea, soon to be known as Nana by all, settled in Texas in 1999, reuniting with her children and grandchildren. A lover and follower of Christ, Nana found her church homes in Greater Mount Calvary, Love Sanctuary, and 70 X 7 Ministries. After 35 years of dedicated service, Nana retired from General Motors in 2006.
To know Nana is to know the true definition of a virtuous family woman. A woman of God. A pillar in her family and community. A tenacious kindred spirit, always modeling her convictions with a giving heart, and an undying love of family. Nana was known for her quick wit, financial savvy, and attention to cleanliness, which for her was certainly next to Godliness.
Nana’s hobbies included gardening, shopping, cooking, knitting, sewing, and beating anyone who sat at the table in Spades. Her infamous sweet potato pies and flare for fashion, will forever be remembered but never duplicated. Nana, like always, met and kept a host of friends and loved ones who would almost always become family. Beatrice is preceded in death by her parents, brother, and her husband.
Beatrice made numerous friends wherever she went and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her. She was a true friend, a most devoted Mother and Grandmother, and a blessing to all that encountered her presence.
She leaves to cherish and honor her memory: her beloved children: Lynn (Ed) Jones, Melanie Garrett, Robin Garrett, Dawn Garrett, Walter Scott Garrett Jr. (LaKisha); devoted grandchildren: Allen Jones, Alda Jones, Breai Johnson, Breyon Johnson, Breian Stewart, Jacques (Kristen) Price, Jason (Alisha) Garrett, Jamin Mitchell, Janai Garrett, Tatiana Wimbley, Jasmin Stewart; adored great grandchildren: Janayiah, Alejandro, Myles, Trinity, Jordan, J2, McKenna, Ava, Jaxx, Dallas, Ace, RJ; close friends: Sister Cheryl Ridge and Dorris Robbins; God-children: Tracy Manning Gibbs (Leroy), Darius Holmes; God-grandchildren: McKenna; and a beautiful village of family and friends.
