Donald Earl Dawkins 74, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his sons Don and John on February 18, 2022.
Don fought a good fight against several illnesses before the Lord call him to his heavenly resting place.
Don loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, family, friends, and neighbors. In other words, Don very seldom met anyone who he did not like. Don was often the life of the party and enjoyed family gatherings. One would always ask, “where is Lo”?
Donald was often referred to as Don, Donald Earl and best known “Bubbolo” and just plain “Lo.” His kind and joyful spirit followed him wherever he went.
Don was born on January 31, 1948, in Dallas, Texas to Welton and Catherine Dawkins. He was an only child but grew up surrounded by loving and caring grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Don was baptized and accepted Christ at an early age. The Dawkins family attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in East Dallas where his father served as a deacon and his mother, a “church mother.” Don participated in many church functions including singing in the choir. As a youngster, he learned to play the violin and the piano and later played the trombone in his high school band where he was the section leader. During the summer, Don loved going to the neighborhood swimming pool and spending time with his family in Rosser, Tx. His charm found him being an escort to many balls and cotillions. Not to say, he was a very good dancer.
Don attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School, Albert Sidney Johnston Jr. High School and James Madison High School. He graduated from Roosevelt High School where he was known to be studious, and active on campus. At Roosevelt, he was a member of the mighty Mustang Band and played on the baseball team. He also played on summer league baseball teams. He was one of the few boys who owned a motor scooter (light blue-school colors) and could be seen riding all over Oak Cliff and around town.
After high school, he enrolled in Langston University, in Oklahoma and transferred to Northwood University where he majored in Business Administration. Don joined the basketball team where he became a school “Star,” and his name can be found along with his team mates in the university’s trophy area. During football season, he served as the football team trainer.
Don worked at several establishments, including country clubs and restaurants, while learning to cook his famous “pan broiled steaks,” he often bragged about. He was interested in cooking and learned to make his mother’s recipes of macaroni, spaghetti, pigs’ feet, oyster dressing and more. In a way, this helped him immensely as a guy living alone.
Don enjoyed a lengthy career in trucking working for companies such as Frozen Food Express, Mary Kaye Cosmetics, and Yellow Freight before retiring from Grocery Supply. After retiring, he would spend time hosting friend and neighbors to a social time sitting on his porch or in his garage where he listened to his favorite music “Jazz.”
Don had a great memory. He could recall dates, times, people and events. He talked about events of yester years as though they occurred yesterday.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Welton and Catherine Dawkins.
He is survived by his children, Don “Pookum” Johnson, Yonyale “John” Birks(Jo Ann), Donyale Falls(Leslie), Christi Biggers(Shawn), Najja Agyei(Shawri), and Tamia Robertson(Harold, Sr., deceased). As well as 11 grandchildren: Shanay Perry, Lindsey Birks, Chilton Birks, Mason Biggers, Y’Vesia Birks, Nicholas Falls, Brianna Johnson, Whisper Agyei, Aria Agyei, Harold Robertson Jr., and Peyton Robertson. Also special neighbors Kim Davis, Kendrick Tillman, Cosme and Maria Contreras and their son Alex who took Great care of Don for the past several years with unmatched love and attention. He will be remembered by his aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins.
Friends were his hallmark, and he never met a stranger.
He was extremely grateful for the support he received from his family, friends and neighbors.
In the words of “Bubbolo”
