Doris Ellen “D’Ellen” Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 29, 1946, to Alyne Sneed Johnson and the late McKinley Johnson, Sr. She was preceded in death by her sisters Lois Jean Johnson Hart and Marcea Eileen Johnson Llahsram, and also her brother McKinley Johnson, Jr.
D’Ellen was a 1965 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas, Texas, and attended Navarro County Junior College and received an Associate’s Degree. She continued her studies at the University of Texas at Arlington and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. D’Ellen developed a lifelong love for politics and ran unsuccessfully to represent District 6 many years ago. She was fondly referred to as the “family politician” and was very active with the Dallas County Democratic Party as a longtime volunteer. In addition she was always eager to assist anyone with locating legal assistance if they asked her for advice. D’Ellen retired from the U.S.Postal Service in 1984 where she worked as a postal clerk. She developed a talent for remembering zip codes from all over the city and the state and could provide a zip code for you if you would ask her.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Methodist Church until her health began to fail her in recent years. She truly loved St. Paul and was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship and was a familiar face in the Women’s Choir for several Women’s Day celebrations.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her mother, Alyne Johnson of Dallas, Texas; four loving sisters, Gwen Chance of Austin, Texas, Carol Ann Johnson, Ardith Fuller (Kenny Fuller, Jr.) and Muriel Johnson-Redd all of Dallas, Texas; brother, Glenn Johnson of Dallas, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special thank you to Pastor Harold Stinson, Rita Bryant, Jean Ball, and Dr. Janette Kotey.
