ELLA SWOOPES

On Wednesday July 7, 2021, Sis Lauretta Swoopes, after sojourning on earth for 70 years, boarded her Angelic flight to her eternal, heavenly home.

A PHENOMENAL WOMAN OF GOD

Ella Swoopes was born in Walla Walla, Washington to the late Raymond and Ethel Lee Kersee Rusk on February 11, 1951.

She met and married the love of her life Alphonso Swoopes. They were married 35 years. As stated in Proverbs 31, the heart of her husband had complete trust in her, and he lacked nothing. She rewarded him with good and not evil all the days of his life. She was his “Mrs. Blue”, and he was her “Candyman”.

She was a woman who loved God with all of her heart and instilled it in her 3 sons, Darrell, Tyrone and Antonio (Bleek). She was an excellent cook, homemaker, mother and wife. She raised her sons, grandchildren in the love of God with no wavering in their faith. Sister Swoopes was a bus driver for Dallas County Schools for over 20 years and was extremely proud to be alongside of her husband who was road mechanic for over 30 years for Dallas County Schools. She loved every child that rode her bus while at the same time she would have no problem correcting them and sharing with them the love of God.

Sister Swoopes found the Lord at an early age under the leadership of her late uncle Rev. J.G. Mackey who was the founder and Pastor of the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She served in the choir and also taught in Baptist Training Union. Later she moved her membership to the New Generation Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Robert Stepney in which she sung in the choir. After leaving New Generation she joined the New Birth Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor George W. Pryor in which she also sung in the choir. Before her passing, she was a dedicated member at the Totally Committed Christian Outreach Center where she served under the Leadership of Pastor Marvin Davis. Sister Swoopes also sung in the DFW Mass Choir and also with Carnell Murrell and the Nework Community Choir.

Her Legacy

Sister Swoopes was proud to have raised her children and grandchildren in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Her words of encouragement and wisdom will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonso Swoopes; parents, Raymond Rusk and Ethel Lee Kersee Rusk; siblings, Raymond Rusk Jr., Herman Aubrey Rusk and Kenneth Warren Rusk.

Those left to cherish her memories: children: Darrell W. Rusk (Gean), Alphonso Tyrone Swoopes Sr. (Daphine), Antonio (Bleek) Swoopes (Monica); siblings, Gilbert Anthony Rusk, Ronald Wayne Rusk, Deborah J. Rusk-Henderson, Beverly G. Burnom, Felicia Rusk; grandchildren, Tyrone Swoopes Jr, Zada Swoopes, Dasja Rusk, Antonio Seption Swoopes, Makayila Swoopes, Domeneque Rusk, Mikael Swoopes, Courtland Crumby, Ciara Crumby, Ronnie Crumby III, Shenedra Wilson, Terrance Wilson, Erika Burton; nieces and nephews, James Rusk, Tamatha Rusk, Teasha Nelms-Rusk, Lakita Henderson, Napoleon Roberson, Gary “Punkin” Robertson, Roynthia Brown, Ronald Brown; a host of cousins, prayer partners and friends.
