Evangelist Helen Smith was born in San Antonio, Texas to the parentage of Mr. and Mrs. E. Lee. As the only child of Ernestine Lee, she and her mother moved from San Antonio to Dallas, Texas when she was a very young child. Helen was educated at Booker T. Washington High School, completed courses at Christ for the Nation and later received a Certificate in Biblical Teaching at D. Edward Johnson Bible Seminary.
In 1933 Helen gave birth to Betty Joe Brown. When she was in her early 20s she entered into holy matrimony with Harold Smith. This marriage spanned over 75 years. Together they founded First Full Gospel Pentecostal Church and embarked on a ministry that reached thousands. After the passing of Bishop Harold Smith, she succeeded him as Pastor of First Full Gospel Pentecostal Church, Pastor of Smith Temple Emmanuel Pentecostal Church and President of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Missionary Association, headquartered in Seattle, Washington, a position she held until her passing.
Helen was a profound evangelizer, bible teacher, church administrator and a great woman of faith. She was a loving grandmother of seven children, eighteen grandchildren and many more great-grandchildren. She was a mother figure to many women and men through her ministry and was best known for her teaching on faith. Many lives where transformed by her leadership, teaching and presence.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Bishop Harold Smith, and two grandsons; Cleophus Pearson, Jr. and Michael Brown. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter and son-in-law, Bishop and First Lady Cleophus Pearson, 5 grandchildren, including Bishop Joe H. Brown, Al Abram, Elder Barri Pearson, Ira Pearson and Kimberly Pearson. She also leaves to cherish her great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends.
