Obituary

On March 11, 2016, Glenn Payne stepped across a threshold, but it was only a step into another room. It was but a stepping into one of the other rooms of our Father’s House.

On August 17, 1951, Glenn began his life’s journey in Monroe, LA to the parentage of Mr. Eugene Payne, Sr. and the late Mrs. Ollie Ruth Jackson Payne.

He was converted and baptized at an early age at Avenue Baptist Church in Monroe, LA. In 1970, he graduated from Carroll High School and entered Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA where he was an outstanding player (#62) of the Jaguars Football Team and received high recognition as an Offensive Guard. While there he received his bachelor’s degree in Education and did further studies at Louisiana Tech. During his matriculation at Southern University he also met the love of his life, Valley C. Jackson. They were married on August 2, 1975 and moved to Shreveport, LA where Glenn started his educational career at J. S. Clark Middle School. One year after their marriage, Valley’s father passed and they reared her youngest brother and sister, Anthony and Linda Jackson. To this blessed union two (2) children, Glenn DeVaughn and Glenndell C. were born and preceded him in death.

Upon moving to Shreveport, the family united with Mt. Canaan Baptist Church where Glenn worked in love, wisdom and humility with courage, patience, joy and self-denial in the following capacities:
1st Vice-Chairman of the Deacon Board,
Sanctuary Choir Member,
Male Chorus Member,
Sunday School Teacher,
Annual Events Chairperson,
Division I Chairman of the Strategic Planning Executive Committee (SPEC) and
Member of Sunday School Class #4.

His educational career of 36 years included Byrd High School as an Athletic Coach and Instructor, Booker T. Washington High School as the Head Football and Track Coach and Instructor and Woodlawn High School as an Athletic Coach. He also served as a Manager and Life Guard for Shreveport Parks and Recreation (SPAR). He had a passion for working with students and was a positive influence in their lives.

His memory will ever live in the hearts of his loving and devoted wife, Valley, of 40 years; his father, Eugene Payne, Sr.; his 10 sisters and brothers Jeanette Payne, Delphine Payne, Alexis Price, Eugene Payne, Jr., Erika Payne, Angela Payne – Gibson, Tynell Payne, Barron Payne (Catina) Greg Howard Payne and Crystal Ballard; 4 sisters-in-law Frankie Walker (Lovell), Eva Jackson, Teressa Parham (Wayne), Linda Jackson and 1 brother-in-law, Anthony Jackson (Charlotte); a host of nieces and nephews; co-workers and friends.
