Jāla Renēe Barrett was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Detra R. Bonner Barrett & Reginald Barrett on June 6, 1988. She was the youngest of two children. She started playing basketball at a young age on an all boys team, and continued to play through middle school. She accepted Christ at the age of 13. Jāla attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, Class of 2006. During her matriculation through Dunbar High School, Jāla excelled academically and in music as the Drum Section Leader in the band.
She received several band honors including lettering in music. Jāla was also awarded multiple college scholarships and was accepted to several universities, but ultimately decided to enter into the workforce while attending community college.
Jāla served as an asset to the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) over 15 years. She initially began her service with FWISD in the Transportation Department and later transferred over to the Payroll Department, specifically handling administrative matters for Maintenance.
Jāla is preceded in death by her grandparents: Edmond and Gloria Bonner; Denver L. Barrett; and Verdie and Virgil Deckard.
The Lord called Jāla home to saturate her soul with peace and rest on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Left to honor her life and legacy are her mother: Detra Bonner Barrett; father: Reginald Barrett; sister: Rehjí Barrett; beloved niece: Rhiann A. Barrett Downs; and her “Puppy Son”: Marley. Jāla also leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
