Loren Jay Hines was born October 1, 1962 in Buffalo, NY, but was raised in South Wales, NY. He was the first of two children born to Edwin R. Hines and Lois Larson Lyon. Loren, being the first grandchild was adored, doted over and loved dearly by his grandparents, aunts and uncles. His Uncle Bill said, “Loren was always special to him and after seeing him for the very first time as a baby, he’s loved him ever since. Loren spent his first 17 years in western NY, and after graduating high school he joined the United States Army and served 4 years. He was stationed in Germany, which he really seemed to enjoy. He talked a lot about finding time to visit Germany again, because of how much fun he had while stationed there. At the end of his military career he moved to Dallas, TX because most of his family had moved there from western NY. While adjusting to his new life in Texas, he worked various jobs over the years. Loren later attended Cedar Valley College (CVC) and received his Associates Degree after completing their HVAC program. His degree landed him an immediate part time position at CVC. He later became full time and began teaching Refrigeration, Residential Cooling and Installation classes for many years. During his tenure at CVC, Loren received the Honor Service Award for 5 & 10 years of service and was very close to receiving his 15 year Service Award. In addition, Loren has been honored with many accolades, such as certificates, plaques, and awards from CVC. He served on the SERT team and volunteered at every possible chance during his career to do anything he could to help the HVAC program. Loren loved his profession at CVC, but loved the students more. Their education was so important to him, he faithfully tutored on Saturday mornings for free. He also participated in the graduation ceremony every year, though it wasn’t required, he took pride in seeing the HVAC students complete the program. He was willing to help anyone that called on him, and that was true even while away on vacation. He never missed work, and donated his sick time back every year to help others that might have a need. He was truly an amazing man who will be dearly missed by many people.
