MERCEDES SMITH

July 20, 1943 — July 15, 2022

Mercedes Smith also known as “Mercy or Mercy D” was born on July 20th, 1943 to the parents of Henrietta and John R. Hall, both deceased, in Shreveport, LA.

A graduate of Booker T. Washington in Shreveport, LA, she dedicated her life to serving others through her volunteer work in education, church usher ministry, healthcare, and more importantly as a wife and mother. She was commonly known as “Momma” to her grandchildren. She was often a shoulder to lean on and a source of precious advice.

She enjoyed spending time with her family. She often made any occasion special with her unique storytelling, dancing and preparing the most delicious foods. In her spare time, she also enjoyed painting, collecting antiques and decorating.

She was married to her faithful husband John Lee Smith Sr. (deceased 2011) for over 40 overs, and they made their home in Dallas, TX amongst a host of family and friends.

She is survived by her four loving and dedicated children: daughters, Sheri English, Teri (Malcolm) Turner and JoAnn Hall; son, John (Khrystle) Smith Jr. Her son, Riley English preceded her in death in 1992.

Mercedes leaves to cherish only the fondest memories: her siblings, Johnny (Gracie) Hall, Robert Hall, Gloria (Stanley) Hopkins, Clarisa Jones, Carol Davis, Pattie Cooper, Martin (Debra) Hall, Eddie D. Hall (deceased), Billy Joe Hall (deceased) and O. V. “Parge” Thompson (deceased).

Sister Smith has a total of twelve living grandchildren, one who preceded her in death, twenty-seven great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Needless to say, she loved them all.
