On March 29, 1946 a son was born to the parents of Robert Lee and Mattie Whitaker. His name was Wendell Lloyd Whitaker. He was the baby of the family, born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas on the Southside of town. He enjoyed school and was a studious young man. He attended high school at the historical I.M. Terrell High School. After graduating from high school he joined the U. S. Army.
After returning from the Army, he went to work at Lennox Air Conditioning. He worked at Lennox for over ten years. During his tenure at Lennox, he developed a desire to own his own business. He became an entrepreneur, the proud owner of Whitaker’s Upholstery Shop for over 20 years.
One day, he met the loves of his life (Alyce, Regina, Donna and Monica). After dating, Wendell & Alyce decided to become a beautiful, blended family. During their union, they welcomed four additional children (Wendolyn, Wendell, Jr., Allyson and Cedric) to the family.
During the early 1970’s, the Lord led Wendell to a small church on E. Vickery Blvd, The Calvary Church of God in Christ, where the late Supt. G. W. Pope was the Pastor. He enjoyed the service and decided to return with his family. The Lord saved him and his wife. He was called to the ministry and was ordained as an Elder at the Calvary Church and he and the family remained faithful members until the Lord led him to Pastor.
Elder Whitaker was the proud Pastor of the Power of God Church of God in Christ for thirty-four years. He attended the first Adjutancy class of the Texas Northwest Jurisdiction under the late Bishop W. H. Watson II.
He was an educated man receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Theology. He also received a Master’s degree in Theology and his Doctorate Degree all from Trinity Valley Theological Seminary in Kennedale, TX. While obtaining his PHD, Pastor Whitaker also taught various courses at the School.
The life and legacy of Dr. Wendell Whitaker will continue through his wife and children.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Alyce, his son Cedric, his daughters, Regina (Tim), Donna (Perry), Monica (David).
