Johnnie Coleman, Jr. was born November 27, 1950 in Cedar Bayou, TX to the parents of Johnnie Coleman, Sr. and Helen Williams. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
Johnnie graduated in 1969 from Ross S. Sterling High School in Baytown, TX. Johnnie earned a four-year (no cut) basketball scholarship to North Texas State University from 1969-1973, where he majored in Physical Education. Johnnie was initiated into the Phi Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, now the University of North Texas in the Fall of 1970.
After college, he worked for Beneficial Finance as an Assistant Loan Manager. He later worked offshore for Western Geophysical as a Senior Observer. At the time of his demise, he was the Senior Shopkeeper at the City of Dallas for over ten years. On July 21, 2018, Johnnie was inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame - Bridging the Gap Basketball Athlete which was a great honor and accomplishment.
Left to cherish his memory are: fiancé, Rose Fields; daughter, Sherrell “She” Coleman-Brewster (Randolph); son, Pastor Kenyatta Simmons (Teri); grandchildren, Asha Shabazz, Amari Shabazz, Arnio Brewster, Diante Cotton, Kenyah Simmons, Devon Simmons; stepchildren, Corey Jones, Sr., Derrick Jackson, Sr., Elgin Fields, Jr.; step grandchildren, Corey Jones, Jr., Dereysha Jackson, Derrick Jackson, Jr., Elgin Fields III; step-great grandchildren, Landon Jackson, Khloe Jackson and a host of relatives and friends.
